Born Natalie Hershlag on June 9, 1981, in Jerusalem, Israel, Natalie Portman is the only child of Avner Hershlag, an Israeli-born fertility specialist, and Shelley Stevens, an American homemaker from Cincinnati, Ohio. At the age of three, her family relocated to the United States, eventually settling in Long Island, New York. Portman attended Syosset High School, graduating in 1999. Demonstrating a strong academic inclination, she pursued higher education at Harvard University, earning a bachelor's degree in psychology in 2003. During her time at Harvard, she also contributed to scientific research, co-authoring a study on enzymatic production of hydrogen.
